Enjoy a drink in Callanan’s family run pub while you listen to an illustrated talk by local Cork historian, Tom Spalding.

The history of Cork’s pubs is in some ways the history of Cork’s people. Even teetotallers are defined in opposition to the pervasive presence of the pub. This talk will cover inns and public houses from the Eighteenth Century to the Twentieth, and present in an accessible way the story of Cork city’s public houses briefly covering: the role of the breweries, the importance of women in the licensed trade, interior design, the derivation of some pub names, the revolution which overcame the business during the 1960s, traditional music, as well as giving a glimpse of social conditions in Cork in these years.

Strictly over 18’s. Participation is limited to 35 people, and booking is essential: www.eventbrite.ie
