Cultural Curiosities – Talk

Love Spoons, Monkey Puzzle Trees, Standing Stones & Mushrooms

Lecture by Shane Lehane

Time: 7pm – 8.30pm

In the course of over 30 years of research and exploration into Irish cultural heritage, Shane Lehane has come across many areas of interest and intrigue that have fascinated him. For culture night he has assembled an absorbing assortment of interesting topics, most hitherto unexplored. These eclectic areas of research do not often find their way to an open public forum and therefore they are the perfect fit for the chautauquan ambitions of Culture Night.

In an illustrated talk, Shane will explore how the carving of wooden spoons was once the main method of expressing love in courtship; how the native tree of Chile Araucaria araucana made its extraordinary journey to Ireland; how a standing stone in a front garden in Ballinlough must be considered as Cork’s oldest prehistoric monument and how a mushroom growing in a tree makes a fascinating connection to a Bronze Age Alpine ice man.
